Sankofa Choir has been running since 2009 by head of the project Dalanda Diallo. Members include African immigrants, their descendants and friends. It has emerged from the Slovenian project ISAK (Expressive World of African Culture), whose goal is to encourage the development of African culture and the awareness about it across Slovenia.
The choir’s repertoire includes traditional and contemporary African songs as well as original material written by the members. Sankofa Choir has performed at events such as Africa Week, Charity concert for Madagascar, Festival of African Culture Baofest, New Year’s celebration of Polhov Gradec Town Council, an event organized by White Circle Foundation, Lent Festival, Trnfest and many others.
The name Sankofa comes from a Ghanaian symbol meaning to take something good from the past and use it in the future. Similarly, the choir will choose traditional African songs and perform them in a new and fresh adaptation.
