AFRICAN DANCE AND MUSIC FOR CHILDREN

Rhythm, music and dance for parents and children under 4 years

Through play, dance and music we come closer to the African culture. We encourage children to express themselves by moving and dancing.

At the beginning we sing traditional African songs, than we warm up by following the rhythm and by imitating animals, later on there comes the use of musical instruments, with which children can act out the desire for drumming, blowing, clattering …

Once a month a musician Issiaka Sounou from Burkina Faso comes to visit us and besides dancing we play on drums and other interesting instruments.

You can join workshop any time during the year.

PERCUSSION COURSES (1,2,3)

PERCUSSIONS 1 – for beginners

Participants will learn the basic beats used on a djembé and come to know some simple African rhythms, before moving on to slightly more complex ones. The class is aimed at absolute beginners and all of those who would like to refresh their basic knowledge of playing the djembé.

PERCUSSIONS 2 – for participants with basic knowledge

The emphasis of the class is on understanding the tune, rhythm and tempo in each of the rhythms. We will perfect the correct way to perform the basic beats and then move on to more complex rhythms, occasionally adding a traditional African song to some of them. The class is aimed at those who already know the basics of African drumming.

PERCUSSIONS 3 – advanced classes

The emphasis of the class is on understanding the tune, rhythm and tempo in each of the rhythms as well as perfecting the correct beats used on a djembé, the switching between hard and soft beats and sustaining accuracy when playing in fast-speed tempo. The class is aimed at those with previous experience of playing the djembé.

INDIVIDUAL CLASSES

When taking up a one-on-one class, you can play the djembé or dunun and/or learn to perform solo on either djembé or dunun.

AFRO KIDZ – African dance for children 5+

– AFRO KIDZ –

Let’s dance together with Emina in the wild rhythms of Africa. Emina comes from Kenya and was educated in the West Africa. Children will get rhythmic and motor skills developed through exercise, which has been developed over the years as an instructor of various workouts and as a dancer. AfroKidz is dedicated to all brave little ones, researchers and the curious ones who are older than five years.

AFROPULZ

The purpose of this class is to improve body fitness and as such it is appropriate both for beginners and experienced dancers. The emphasis is on increasing one’s endurance, flexibility, awareness and control of the body as well as on sustaining and correctly performing the basic movements of African dances.

Beginners will get acquainted with the elements of African dances and learn the correct dance posture, gain fitness and flexibility. The class offers a good base for further or simultaneously attended other dance education.

Experienced dancers will deepen their body awareness and be able to check the accuracy of performing their moves as well as maintain and improve their fitness and flexibility.

Afro-pulse can be a stand-alone class or serve as an additional class to complement any other dance education as it provides a good base for beginners’ but is also useful build-on to more advanced classes.

DANCEHALL

Dancehall as a form of urban music and dance style originated in Jamaica is gaining recognition and popularity worldwide. Forming a cultural expression as a whole, the dance is based on specific steps and each of them has its own name, creator and meaning. The dancehall class at Kud Baobab offers a wide range of styles within dancehall, dance technique, knowledge about history and culture in Jamaica and a good workout that relaxes the mind and the body.

Maya aka Shee has been teaching dancehall for the last three years. She was also nominated at the 2012 jamaican DanceJa dance awards in the category of the best female dancer – global link.

REGGAETON

Reggaeton is a style of urban dance and music, which began to develop in the seventies in Panama. It reached its final stage of development and formed into what it is today in Puerto Rico. Most reggaeton musicians come from this area. Reggaeton is a mixture of dancehall, Latin hip hop, salsa, electronic music and other Caribbean music genres. It is characterized by its rhythm called “dem bow”. This energetic type of dance develops awareness of the body in motion and space, enhances various muscle groups, and helps one to become more confident and relaxed.

CONTEMPORARY DANCE

Urša starts her classes with simple, but dynamic worm-up of an entire body, wich is followed by structured floor work, locomotor phrases within the vertical line and spatial combinations, that she upgrades in final dance composition or choreography. She pays attention to softness and fluidity of the movement, fluid transitions between vertical and horizontal level and expressive interpretation of dance material.

In this class we will combine traditional African moves with popular ones. Different African dance and music styles, such as coupé-décalé, azonto, kuduro and semba, will be incorporated. We will learn how to control and isolate different parts of the body, reinforce different muscle groups and besides that have a lot of fun.
