10.00 A visit to an African village: dance and music performance for children
Two travellers embark on a fantasy journey. They arrive to an African village, where they meet the village women. They use dance and music to demonstrate their daily chores and by using drumming take them into the world of African music and its rhythms. Through dance they walk them through the laborious but fun-filled and pleasant day. As the travellers don’t speak the language of the village, they communicate through music, dance and gestures and so learn about the pulse of this African place.
17.00 Dance and music workshop for youth and adults
Participants will learn about traditional African dances of Western Africa combined with modern, contemporary dances. Suitable for youth and adults. Workshop is led by choreographer and dancer Maša Kagao Knez and percussionists alive.
20.30 Expressive world of African culture: choir Sankofa
Sankofa Choir has been running since 2009 by head of the project Dalanda Diallo. Members include African immigrants, their descendants and friends. It has emerged from the Slovenian project ISAK (Expressive World of African Culture), whose goal is to encourage the development of African culture and the awareness about it across Slovenia. The choir’s repertoire includes traditional and contemporary African songs as well as original material written by the members. Sankofa Choir has performed at events such as Africa Week, Charity concert for Madagascar, Festival of African Culture Baofest, New Year’s celebration of Polhov Gradec Town Council, an event organized by White Circle Foundation, Lent Festival, Trnfest and many others. The name Sankofa comes from a Ghanaian symbol meaning to take something good from the past and use it in the future. Similarly, the choir will choose traditional African songs and perform them in a new and fresh adaptation.
21:00 Expressive world of African culture: dance and music perfomance Footsteps: dancers and percussionists alive
The evening of dance and music called Footsteps is a presentation of short dance pieces that members of Baobab Dance Company have developed in 2012. Dance routines have either emerged from a certain traditional West African dance or have come out of exploring one’s own dance expression based on a traditional rhythm, but they are all connected, interwoven and complementing each other.
